Sensei Vicky started with Karate while studying BSc Nursing at Wits University in Johannesburg and started Shukokai Karate. When she left Johannesburg and returned home to Salisbury in Zimbabwe she took a break from Karate while doing her Midwifery course at Harare Hospital in Zimbabwe.
After getting married in 1978, Sense Vicky and her husband joined Goju Ryu Karate in Harare under the tuition of Sensei Graham Campbell and Sensei James Rousseau. She was due to grade for my shodan in 1981, but her sensei would not approve as she was pregnant with her eldest daughter.
Sensei Vicky left Zimbabwe as a family in 1985 and went to New Germany in Durban and the whole family joined Skukokai Karate as the dojo was conveniently situated. In 1991 she moved to Cape Town where she joined the OGKK dojo of Excellence in June 2001 under the tuition of Sensei Cisna Mostert and Sensei Francois Van Graan, with Sensei Lilian Kattan and Sensei Elias Kattan as head of style in South Africa. Kikugawa Sensei, in Okinawa, was overseeing the South African dojo and often came to S.A. for Gassukus.
Sensei Vicky graded for Yondan (4th Dan) grade in April 2015 under the watchful eyes of Kikugawa Sensei , Sensei lilian Kattan and Sensei Elias Kattan. In the competition arena, the most memorable tournament was in September 2013 at Stellenbosch where she took part in the WGKF and World Championship to win a silver medal in kata.
Sensei Vicky and her husband emigrated to England in May 2017 to avoid the violence in South Africa. It took 2 years to for her nursing qualifications accepted by the English Nursing Council after which she was employed as a scrub nurse in the Elective Orthopaedic Operating Theatres where she scrubbed for joint replacements. She spent the whole of Covid lockdown in I.T.U. , nursing Covid patients, before life returned to a semblance of normality in 2022.
She retired in December 2023 and moved to Lincoln in January 2024, where she was encouraged to open her dojo in Metheringham, Lincoln. She met Sensei Aamar in Perugia June 2024 and subsequently joined under Karate Academy UK.
